Located in the heart of the city of Ha Noi, Hoan Kiem Lake is not just a lake; it is a part of citizen life for hundred years. This urban environment is evolving rapidly. Bicycle and tramway are replaced by motorbike and cars. New transport strategies are being explored around the city providing the opportunity to rethink the urban structure of this sensitive area.

What if Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc would totally returns to the people of Ha Noi?

Regarding the historical elements, the urban context and the transport strategy that would be applied to this area; Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square is obviously a bond between the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake. The project LUC THUY PARK aims to solve the transition from its busy and colourful neighbourhoods to the peaceful waters of Hanoi iconic lake. Without heavy circulation dividing Dinh Tien Hoang Street, we propose a reorganization of the space with new urban programs to complete the actual situation. The front spaces of surrounding buildings are extended to bring their activities on a new plaza, the “Shopping Promenade”. Small pockets of tranquillity capture pieces of landscape and mark the progression of dreamy walkers through the new plaza.

All the interventions are conceived as layers around a central element, Hoan Kiem Lake, from the most intimate to the busiest one. The link is the common ground that runs through the site and set up all programs and paths at the same level. All the programs are activated by mineral squares installed along the lake promenade. This strategy could be applied to the rest of Hoan Kiem area giving a logical structure to the lake and its surroundings. In its own way, this space organisation takes into account the existing situation and its historical context creating a new relation to water.
